MPD Outlines Temporary Waterway Restrictions on Potomac and Anacostia Rivers

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department’s (MPD) Harbor Patrol Unit has implemented temporary waterway restrictions and safety zones on the Potomac and Anacostia rivers through the morning of Sunday, July 5, 2026.

The safety restrictions are designed to regulate maritime traffic and ensure security during the holiday weekend events and fireworks displays. Recreational, commercial, and charter vessels must comply with designated safety zones and wake limits.

Potomac River Safety Rules:

  • Vessel Closure: The Potomac River is closed to all recreational vessels between the 14th Street Bridge and the Key Bridge from 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, July 2, through 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5. Boating and anchoring in this area are prohibited.
  • No Wake Zone: A designated “No Wake” zone is active between the Woodrow Wilson Bridge and the 14th Street Bridge through Sunday morning.

Anacostia River Safety Rules:

  • Safety Zone Enforcement: A safety zone is enforced between the Frederick Douglass Bridge and the 11th Street Bridge, active from 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 4, through 1:00 a.m. on Sunday, July 5. Transit is completely blocked during the fireworks show.

Recreational viewing anchorages have been designated south of the 14th Street Bridge Complex. Marine operators are reminded to wear life jackets, stay alert for posted buoys, and avoid operating watercraft while under the influence of alcohol.
