MPD Announces Road Closures and Parking Restrictions for Independence Day Events

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced extensive street closures and emergency parking restrictions throughout the city in preparation for the “Salute to America 250” and other Independence Day events on July 4, 2026.

To accommodate the buildout and security requirements for the national celebration, various traffic restrictions commenced earlier this week and will continue through the holiday. Major thoroughfares around the National Mall, including Constitution Avenue and Independence Avenue, are experiencing closures and parking bans.

Key Traffic and Parking Restrictions:

  • Constitution Avenue, NW: Emergency no-parking is in effect from 23rd Street to 6th Street, NW. The eastbound curb lane is also closed from 14th Street to 6th Street, NW.
  • Independence Avenue, SW: The roadway is completely closed to vehicle traffic from 15th Street to Maine Avenue, SW.

In addition to the central Salute to America events, multiple community parades—including the National Independence Day Parade, the Barracks Row Parade, and the Palisades Parade—will prompt localized street closures on July 4.

With an Extreme Heat Alert active in the District, city officials urge residents and visitors to plan their travel in advance, utilize public transportation (Metro), and stay informed by signing up for official updates by texting “DC250” to 888-777 or visiting 250.dc.gov.
