MPD Investigates Armed Carjacking, Officer-Involved Shooting in Southeast

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department says an armed carjacking in Northeast Washington led to a police pursuit, a search near Oxon Run Trail and an officer-involved shooting investigation early Wednesday in Southeast.

MPD said Fifth District officers responded at about 1:20 a.m. on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, to the 700 block of 19th Street NE for a report of an armed carjacking. Investigators said two suspects approached a victim outside, and one pointed a rifle while demanding the victim’s car keys.

The victim complied and fled unharmed, police said. The suspects left in the victim’s gray 2026 Honda Civic with a D.C. license plate, and MPD said a description of the armed suspects and the vehicle was shared in a citywide radio broadcast.

At about 1:54 a.m., Seventh District officers found the vehicle traveling on Valley Avenue SE toward 9th Street SE and tried to stop it, according to MPD. Police said the vehicle fled, and the pursuit ended at 2nd Street and Xenia Street SE, where the suspects got out and ran into a wooded area of the Oxon Run Trail.

MPD said an officer in a marked police cruiser was canvassing the tree line along the 4000 block of Livingston Road SE at about 2:02 a.m. when one suspect came out from the tree line. Police said the officer gave commands, but the suspect did not comply and raised a rifle toward the officer. The officer discharged a service pistol from the driver’s seat, and the suspect fled back into the tree line.

After a search, police said that suspect was not found. MPD said there are no known injuries or property damage from the officer’s gunfire, and the officer was not injured and was alone in the cruiser.

Police said a 13-year-old juvenile male from Southeast D.C. was arrested at about 2:13 a.m. near where the vehicle had stopped. The juvenile was charged with Armed Carjacking, Reckless Driving and Fleeing from a Law Enforcement Officer.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave under MPD policy. MPD said its Force Investigations Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the U.S. Attorney’s Office will independently review the facts and evidence. The armed carjacking remains under investigation; anyone with information can call police at (202) 727-9099 or text 50411. MPD listed the case under CCN 26086942 and said a reward of up to $10,000 is available for information leading to an arrest and conviction in a violent crime case.
