Baltimore, MD – In an unprecedented act of violence, a block party in Baltimore turned deadly early Sunday, resulting in 30 injured and two fatalities. The joyous neighborhood celebration tragically escalated into what witnesses have likened to a “war zone.”
Among the deceased are Aaliyah Gonzales, 18, and Kylis Fagbemi, 20, whose lives were abruptly cut short by the gunfire. A diverse demographic, ranging in age from 13 to 32, were injured during the incident. The victims include both male and female youths and adults. Three individuals remain in critical condition.
The Baltimore Police Commissioner, Richard Worley, confirmed that all casualties were gunshot victims and reiterated that authorities are currently pursuing multiple suspects. The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood, during an unpermitted block party event on the 800 block of Gretna Court. Local law enforcement reacted promptly to the multitude of 911 calls reporting gunfire.
As the city mourns the senseless loss, Mayor Scott’s impassioned plea emphasizes the city’s determination to bring the culprits to justice. He underscored the tragedy’s impact, reminding those responsible of the lives they’ve stolen and the community they’ve traumatized.
Both Mayor Scott and Commissioner Worley appealed for the community’s assistance in identifying the perpetrators of the attack. Worley added, “If you saw anything or know anything, please call 911.”
The horrific incident has deeply impacted the community. A witness described the chaos as people scrambled for safety, including two young women who sought help after being shot. The community is left grappling with the reality of the lives irrevocably altered by this act of violence.
The medical response included nine victims transported by ambulance to local hospitals, with an additional 20 individuals seeking treatment independently. As of Sunday afternoon, most have been discharged, leaving only a few in critical condition.
In the wake of the tragedy, Maryland Governor Wes Moore condemned the violence, declaring the state’s resolute stance against such atrocities. He reaffirmed Maryland’s commitment to combat gun violence and prevent further tragedies.
