WASHINGTON, D.C. — The District has awarded Lyft a new five-year contract to operate and maintain Capital Bikeshare, setting the stage for a broader station network and more electric-bike charging across the region.
The agreement covers the District and seven other participating jurisdictions. It is expected to support grid-connected stations where e-bike batteries can recharge while docked, a change intended to improve bike availability, reduce operating costs and cut vehicle travel associated with battery servicing.
Capital Bikeshare recorded more than 6 million trips in 2025, including a single-day record of more than 35,000 rides on March 29. The network ended that year with 820 stations and passed 850 stations in June 2026.
Officials said the new contract is also intended to keep fares among the most affordable in the country as the system expands. Capital Bikeshare has operated in the Washington region for nearly 16 years.
A promotion marking the system’s anniversary offers 16% off one classic or electric-bike ride of up to 30 minutes through Sept. 30, with a maximum savings of $2 and limited availability.
