WASHINGTON, D.C. — District officials are marking the completion of a $67 million modernization of Malcolm X Elementary School in Ward 8, unveiling a campus that is twice the size of the former facility.
The newly modernized 85,000-square-foot school includes expanded early-childhood classrooms, updated general elementary classrooms and dedicated STEAM learning spaces. The project also added a new gymnasium and library.
Outdoor improvements include learning spaces, playgrounds and a synthetic-turf athletic field. Public art honoring Malcolm X is incorporated throughout the school, including a life-size statue.
Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ambassador Attallah Shabazz, D.C. Public Schools leaders and Department of General Services officials are scheduled to hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Mississippi Avenue SE campus on Monday morning.
Malcolm X Elementary is one of eight District schools receiving a modernization or addition for the 2026-27 school year. District officials said the city has invested $468 million in Ward 8 school projects since 2015.
