National Independence Day Parade Cancelled in D.C. Due to Extreme Heat

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Organizers have cancelled America’s National Independence Day Parade, scheduled for July 4, 2026, in Washington, D.C., due to a severe Extreme Heat Warning and dangerous weather conditions forecasted across the region.

The annual parade was set to begin at 10:30 a.m. along Constitution Avenue. However, with the National Weather Service issuing an alert for heat index values expected to climb between 110°F and 115°F, event organizers made the decision to prioritize the safety of participants and spectators.

An Extreme Heat Alert remains activated in the District through Sunday, July 5. D.C. officials are operating Healthy Active Living cooling centers and modifying public services to protect vulnerable populations. Residents and visitors are strongly urged to stay indoors, limit physical exertion, remain hydrated, and seek air-conditioned environments.
