MPD Arrests Suspect in Northeast Homicide Investigation

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department said a suspect has been arrested and extradited to the District in connection with a Northeast homicide investigation.

Police said Sixth District officers responded at about 4:33 p.m. on Sunday, May 24, to a report of an unconscious person in the 3300 block of East Capitol Street NE. Officers found an adult male who was unconscious but breathing and suffering from severe injuries, according to MPD.

DC Fire and EMS transported the man to a local hospital, where he later died despite lifesaving efforts, police said. MPD said the victim was pronounced dead on Friday, May 29, and was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. An autopsy on Wednesday, June 3, determined the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries, and the death was ruled a homicide.

Detectives determined that the offense occurred at a residence in the 3600 block of Jay Street NE, according to MPD. Police identified the victim as 35-year-old Dalonte Lamont Jackson of Northeast D.C.

On Tuesday, June 16, local authorities in Jackson, North Carolina, arrested 35-year-old Maurice Pierre Hawley of Northwest D.C. pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court arrest warrant, police said. Hawley was extradited to the custody of the MPD Fugitive Unit on Tuesday, June 30, transported to the Homicide Branch, and formally charged with first-degree murder. MPD thanked the U.S. Marshals Service and the North Carolina Marshal Fugitive Task Force for helping locate and arrest the suspect in North Carolina.
