Mayor Bowser Breaks Ground on $35.6M Crummell Community Center in Ward 5

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mayor Muriel Bowser and community members are breaking ground Monday on the new Crummell Community Center, a $35.6 million Ward 5 investment at the historic Alexander Crummell School site.

The June 22 event marks a new phase for the long-vacant school building, which the District says will be revitalized while preserving the history of the property. The project is intended to turn the site into a modern community space for residents and families.

The groundbreaking is scheduled for 11 a.m. at 1900 Gallaudet Street NE. The Mayor’s office listed Bowser, Department of General Services Director Delano Hunter, and Department of Parks and Recreation Director Thennie Freeman among the speakers for the event.

District officials are also using the event to highlight summer resources for D.C. families as summer break begins. According to the Mayor’s office, free meal sites are opening across the city on Monday.

The Crummell project gives Ward 5 a high-profile recreation and community-space investment while bringing renewed public use to a historic school building that has been vacant for years.
