WASHINGTON, D.C. — The District Department of Transportation is warning drivers, commuters and visitors to plan around a new set of temporary traffic shifts, lane closures and ramp impacts scheduled for the week of June 15, with several changes centered around Maine Avenue SW and the 14th Street corridor.
In a Friday advisory, DDOT listed multiple short-term impacts expected to affect travel near the Southwest waterfront, including a westbound Maine Avenue SW traffic shift anticipated to begin June 15 and overnight lane closures on Maine Avenue SW and 14th Street SW scheduled for June 15 and June 16. The agency also said an eastbound Maine Avenue SW traffic shift and related overnight lane and ramp closure are anticipated to begin June 18.
The weekly notice also flags Theodore Roosevelt Bridge work, including the full closure of the I-66 eastbound ramp to Independence Avenue NW from June 12 through June 15, along with a separate temporary ramp closure from southbound George Washington Memorial Parkway to I-66 eastbound. DDOT’s list includes bridge preventive maintenance, I-395 HOV bridge rehabilitation activity, and continuing closures tied to DC PLUG utility work.
For residents moving through Capitol Hill and Southeast, DDOT said a temporary closure of the Independence Avenue SE to C Street NE connector loop road begins June 16. Phase 1 construction and lane closures on Pennsylvania Avenue SE from 27th Street to Fairlawn Avenue are also beginning in June.
The advisory comes as Washington prepares for a busy mid-June travel stretch, with event traffic, summer tourism and roadwork all competing for limited street space. DDOT encouraged travelers to use posted detours, watch for work crews and check transportation updates before heading out.
DDOT says its mission is to help people and goods move safely and efficiently while reducing impacts on neighborhoods and the environment. The agency posts transportation-related updates through its website and social media channels, and points travelers to goDCgo for information on transit, biking, walking and other options around the District.
