Federal Initiative Expands Smart Mobility Funding to Modernize Capital Transit Corridors

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal officials on Friday announced a new initiative to expand smart mobility funding aimed at modernizing transit corridors across the capital region and surrounding commuter routes.

The program is designed to support traffic flow improvements, bus priority upgrades, crosswalk safety work, and signal coordination projects intended to reduce delays and improve reliability for daily riders.

Officials said the initiative will also direct attention to older infrastructure bottlenecks where small improvements can produce measurable gains in travel time, accessibility, and emergency response efficiency.

Local agencies are expected to submit project requests over the coming weeks, with priority given to corridors that serve high-volume neighborhoods, major employment centers, and transit-dependent communities.

Advocates say the move could help unlock practical upgrades that are visible quickly and easier to scale than larger, slower-moving capital projects.

As part of the rollout, transportation departments will coordinate with municipal partners to identify the first wave of eligible intersections, segments, and transit stops.

The Washington Herald will continue tracking how federal funding translates into on-the-ground improvements across the region.
