WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal transit leaders on Saturday outlined a new funding package aimed at accelerating rail safety upgrades, station repairs, and emergency-response improvements across the capital region.
Officials said the plan will prioritize signal modernization, track inspection technology, and faster maintenance cycles at high-traffic stations. The effort is designed to reduce service disruptions while giving commuters a safer and more reliable daily ride.
Supporters of the package said the move reflects a broader push to harden aging infrastructure before failures create larger costs for riders and agencies alike. They added that the upgrades should improve accessibility, reduce bottlenecks, and help transit systems better absorb peak-hour demand.
