WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal transportation officials this week announced a new initiative to expand access to innovation grants aimed at modernizing public transit systems across the country. The program will provide funding to support projects that improve efficiency, accessibility, and sustainability within bus, rail, and multimodal transit networks. Officials say the initiative is designed to encourage the adoption of new technologies and forward-thinking transit solutions in both large metropolitan areas and smaller communities.According to agency leaders, eligible projects may include electric bus deployments, smart ticketing systems, and improved accessibility features for riders with disabilities. The initiative will also promote pilot programs that test emerging transportation technologies in real-world settings.Transportation experts noted that investing in innovation is key to meeting growing demand for reliable and environmentally friendly transit options. The program is expected to foster collaboration between local transit agencies, private technology firms, and research institutions.Applications for the first round of grants are expected to open later this year, with selected projects beginning implementation shortly thereafter. The Washington Heraldeditorial@thewashingtonherald.comWashington, D.C.
