WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department said three suspects were arrested after a fatal Northwest crash Saturday that began when United States Park Police tried to stop a stolen vehicle.
According to MPD, U.S. Park Police detected a stolen silver 2014 Honda Accord at about 5:35 p.m. June 20 near Rock Creek Parkway and Virginia Avenue NW. Park Police attempted a traffic stop, but the vehicle fled through Rock Creek Parkway, Shoreham Drive, 24th Street and Connecticut Avenue NW.
MPD said the Honda was speeding south on the William Howard Taft Bridge when it crossed into opposing lanes and struck a moped. Police said the vehicle continued south off the bridge onto Connecticut Avenue NW, turned onto Kalorama Road NW, and struck an occupied Toyota RAV4 before coming to a final stop.
The occupants of the Honda tried to flee but were quickly apprehended by members of the United States Park Police and the United States Marshals Service, according to MPD. DC Fire and EMS responded to the crash, and the moped operator was pronounced dead despite lifesaving efforts.
Police identified the decedent as 46-year-old Nolberto Meza of Hyattsville, Maryland. Two adult men who were in the Toyota RAV4 were taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
MPD said its Major Crash Investigations Unit assisted at the request of U.S. Park Police. Police said the driver, 24-year-old Tomas Anderson of Northeast D.C., was charged with Murder II, while 19-year-old Donnie Palacios of Southeast D.C. and a 16-year-old juvenile male of Fort Washington, Maryland, were charged with Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle — Crime of Violence. The case number is CCN 26085127.
