WASHINGTON, D.C. — Mayor Muriel Bowser has named Dr. Kim Jackson as interim chancellor of DC Public Schools, elevating a longtime DCPS educator who has served as a principal, instructional superintendent and central-office leader.
Jackson’s DCPS tenure began in 2012 as principal of Seaton Elementary School. The mayor’s office said she was recognized as Principal of the Year in 2015 and received the Rubenstein Award.
After leading Seaton, Jackson served as an instructional superintendent and later as chief of elementary schools, supporting elementary instructional superintendents, schools and the Early Childhood Education Division. In her most recent role as chief of schools, she helped lead the district’s annual Literacy Institute and oversaw implementation of the Building Blocks curriculum.
“We are proud to have another lifelong educator at the helm of DCPS,” Bowser said in the announcement, adding that Jackson has helped lead programming that accelerated student learning and strengthened school communities across the city’s eight wards.
Jackson said it is an honor to serve as interim chancellor for a school system that shaped her career as both an educator and a leader. She said she looks forward to building on DCPS progress with students, staff and school communities.
The mayor’s office said Jackson’s background also includes work as a special education teacher, assistant principal and principal before joining DCPS. She holds degrees from Morgan State University, Coppin State University, Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and American University.
