The District Department of Transportation is advancing early design work for a proposed Missouri Avenue NW trail connection, a short but closely watched link intended to improve neighborhood access to Rock Creek Park and the broader Military Road Trail corridor.
DDOT scheduled a community public meeting at Emery Heights Community Center, 5701 Georgia Avenue NW, to gather feedback on existing conditions and preliminary design concepts for the corridor between 17th Street NW and 14th Street NW. The agency said the session was meant to give residents a chance to learn about the proposal, ask questions and offer input before design work moves further along.
The proposal focuses on creating what DDOT describes as a safe, low-stress and accessible active transportation connection. For residents in nearby Northwest neighborhoods, the segment could help fill a gap between local streets, community destinations and Rock Creek Park.
The Missouri Avenue segment is tied to the larger Military Road Trail effort. DDOT says this portion was evaluated as part of the National Park Service’s Military Road Trail Feasibility Study, completed in 2022, and is now being advanced for initial design and public review.
Trail and bike-pedestrian projects often turn on details that matter block by block, including crossing locations, traffic interactions, sidewalk and trail widths, lighting and access for people with disabilities. DDOT’s public meeting gives residents an early point of contact while those concepts are still being shaped.
The agency’s project page describes the meeting as part of an effort to gather community feedback on both current conditions and preliminary design concepts. DDOT has not announced a final design or construction timeline for the connection.
