Federal Digital Infrastructure Plan Targets Faster Broadband Expansion

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal officials this week outlined a new strategy designed to accelerate broadband expansion and strengthen digital infrastructure across underserved communities in the United States.

The plan focuses on improving access to high‑speed internet in rural areas, smaller cities, and neighborhoods where reliable connectivity has historically been limited. Officials say expanded broadband access is essential for education, healthcare services, remote work, and economic development.

Technology policy experts participating in the announcement emphasized that modern digital infrastructure plays a critical role in supporting innovation and maintaining global competitiveness. The strategy encourages partnerships between federal agencies, state governments, and private telecommunications providers to speed deployment of new broadband networks.

According to officials, the initiative will also promote investment in fiber‑optic networks, support community broadband planning programs, and expand technical assistance for local governments seeking to upgrade connectivity systems.

Federal agencies are expected to begin reviewing regional proposals later this year as the program moves into its implementation phase.
