WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department has arrested a 25-year-old Northwest Washington man in connection with a fatal stabbing on 14th Street NW in July.
MPD said Third District officers arrested Andrew Tyree Richardson on Sunday morning pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court warrant. Richardson was charged with second-degree murder while armed in the death of Charles Sharp, 56, of Northwest Washington.
The case stems from a July 11 response to the 2900 block of 14th Street NW. Officers found Sharp suffering from a stab wound shortly before 1 a.m., and D.C. Fire and EMS pronounced him dead at the scene, according to police. The Washington Herald previously reported on the initial homicide investigation.
Police said a dog came out of a different residence and charged officers while they had the suspect in custody. One officer deployed an electronic control device without stopping the dog, after which another officer fired a service weapon and struck the animal. The dog died from its injuries, while no officers or the suspect were injured, MPD said.
MPD said its Internal Affairs Bureau Force Investigations Team is investigating the officer-involved shooting. The department also charged Richardson with first-degree burglary and possession of a BB gun under a separate case number.
The charges are allegations, and Richardson is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
