WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a fatal Southeast crash involving a motor scooter and an SUV.
Police said Seventh District officers responded at about 3:28 p.m. Sunday to Malcolm X Avenue and Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE for a reported crash. Officers found a juvenile male with serious injuries, and DC Fire and EMS took him to a hospital, where he died.
MPD identified the decedent as 17-year-old Demetrius Stuckey of Southeast D.C.
According to the department’s preliminary investigation, Stuckey was operating a 2025 Zhilong Fly Wing scooter without a helmet and traveling northeast in the 2900 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue SE. Police said a 2024 Dodge Hornet, occupied only by its driver, was traveling in the same direction in the far-right lane and slowing to pull toward the curb to park.
As the Dodge began moving toward the curb, the scooter attempted to pass on the passenger side and struck the SUV’s passenger-side mirror, investigators said. The impact caused the scooter operator to fall, and the scooter continued forward into the rear of a parked vehicle.
Police said the Dodge driver remained at the scene and was not injured.
Anyone with information is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to 50411. MPD listed the case as CCN 26085643.
