MPD Investigates Fatal E-Bike Crash on South Capitol Street SE

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a fatal e-bike crash on South Capitol Street SE after a man died from injuries sustained Wednesday afternoon.

MPD said the single-vehicle crash happened on June 17, 2026, at approximately 4:09 p.m. in the 2300 block of South Capitol Street SE. According to the department’s preliminary investigation, the e-bike operator was traveling northbound on the west sidewalk when he failed to negotiate a curve and veered right, striking a curb.

DC Fire and EMS responded and transported the operator to a local hospital with critical injuries. Police said he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The decedent was identified by MPD as 22-year-old Jayquan Alexander Sweat of Riverdale, Maryland.

Investigators asked anyone with information about the crash to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text the department’s tip line at 50411. MPD listed the case number as CCN 26083485.

In the release, MPD also reminded cyclists to wear a correctly fitted helmet, ride in the same direction as traffic, follow traffic signals and signs, and use bike lanes when possible.
