WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department announced the arrest of a 17-year-old in connection with the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl on Benning Road NE in May 2025.
Fifth District officers responded to the 1700 block of Benning Road NE at about 5:08 p.m. on May 21, 2025, after a report of a shooting. Officers found Zytina Mason-Brown, 14, of Clinton, Maryland, unconscious and suffering from a critical gunshot wound. D.C. Fire and EMS pronounced her dead at the scene, police said.
The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined on Aug. 19, 2025, that the death was a homicide, according to MPD.
Police said the 17-year-old, a Southeast D.C. resident whose name was not released because of the suspect’s age, was taken into custody Wednesday under a D.C. Superior Court pre-petition custody order. The teen was charged with second-degree murder while armed.
The charge is an allegation, and the accused is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. MPD identified the case as CCN 25075671.
