WASHINGTON, D.C. — District officials have completed a $23 million addition at Barnard Elementary School, adding classrooms and specialized learning spaces to the Ward 4 campus.
The 23,000-square-foot addition includes 12 general education classrooms, a hands-on specials lab and dedicated special education areas, according to an official release from the Office of Mayor Muriel Bowser.
Officials said the project brings students together under one roof and includes a green roof, new play fields, gardens and bioretention ponds. The sustainability features are intended to support the District’s goals for modern and environmentally responsible public facilities.
District leaders also visited Whittier Elementary School’s new modular swing-space campus, where students will attend classes while that school undergoes a full modernization. The renovated Whittier campus is scheduled to open for the 2028-29 school year.
Since 2015, the District has invested nearly $5 billion in school facilities, including almost $800 million in Ward 4 modernization projects, the mayor’s office said.
