MPD Investigates 1st Street Shooting That Killed 17-Year-Old

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating the death of a 17-year-old who was shot last month on 1st Street Northwest and died from his injuries Sunday.

Third District officers responded at approximately 12:09 a.m. on July 21 to the 2900 block of 1st Street NW after receiving a report of a shooting, according to an MPD release. Officers found a juvenile male unconscious and suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was taken to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police said he died Aug. 2 despite lifesaving efforts and identified him as Makai Smith of Northeast Washington.

MPD is investigating the case as a homicide under case number 26101448. The department is offering a reward of up to $25,000 for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in a District homicide.
