MPD Investigates Fatal Pedestrian Collision at 14th and Independence

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department is investigating a pedestrian death stemming from a July 5 collision at 14th Street and Independence Avenue SW.

According to an MPD release issued Monday, U.S. Park Police responded to the intersection at about 9 p.m. and found a woman seriously injured in the roadway. Police said she had been traveling east through the north crosswalk on a motorized mobility scooter when a westbound Ford F-150 turned right from Independence Avenue onto 14th Street and struck her.

The woman was flown to a hospital by a U.S. Park Police helicopter. MPD identified her as 79-year-old Virginia Voight of Palmyra, New Jersey, and said she died from her injuries on July 12.

MPD said a National Guard member intervened after the driver continued from the collision and detained him until officers arrived. Police identified the driver as 55-year-old Michael Wayne Mills of Germantown, Maryland, and said he was arrested at the scene on allegations of driving under the influence and leaving after colliding. MPD said additional charges are pending further investigation. Charges are allegations, and defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
