MPD Arrests Suspect in 2020 14th Street NW Homicide

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Metropolitan Police Department officials announced an arrest in a 2020 homicide case tied to a mass shooting in Northwest Washington, according to an MPD release.

Police said Fourth District officers responded at about 4:53 p.m. on July 19, 2020, to the 3600 block of 14th Street NW for a report of a shooting. Officers found eight adult men and one adult woman suffering from gunshot wounds, and DC Fire and EMS transported the victims to area hospitals for treatment.

One of the male victims later died after life-saving efforts failed, police said. MPD identified him as 28-year-old Devin Peterson of Northeast D.C.

According to MPD, members of the Capitol Area Regional Fugitive Task Force located and arrested 26-year-old Jaden Smith of Hyattsville, Maryland, on Thursday, June 25, 2026, pursuant to a D.C. Superior Court indictment.

Smith has been charged with First Degree Murder While Armed, police said. MPD listed the case number as CCN 20103748.

The announcement marks a new development in a case that began nearly six years ago on one of Northwest Washington’s busiest corridors. MPD did not provide additional court schedule information in the release.
