WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit is investigating a multi-vehicle traffic collision in Southeast Washington that left one woman dead following a medical emergency behind the wheel.
Officers from the Seventh District responded at approximately 8:14 a.m. on Wednesday, October 28, 2026, to the 900 block of Mississippi Avenue, Southeast, after receiving reports of a crash. Upon arrival, emergency responders located an overturned 2027 Nissan Rogue, a 2021 Nissan Rogue, and three damaged, unoccupied parked vehicles.
According to preliminary findings by investigators, the operator of the 2027 Nissan Rogue suffered a medical emergency, causing her to slump over the steering wheel while the vehicle remained in motion. An adult female passenger in the front seat attempted to regain control of the SUV but was unable to do so before colliding with a 2021 Nissan Rogue turning right from southbound 10th Place, Southeast, onto the westbound lane of Mississippi Avenue.
The impact forced the 2021 Nissan Rogue into a parked vehicle, initiating a chain reaction that damaged two additional parked vehicles. The 2027 Nissan Rogue continued westbound along the roadway before overturning and coming to rest.
D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services responded and transported all injured parties to local hospitals. The driver of the overturned SUV was pronounced dead at the hospital despite lifesaving efforts. Authorities identified the decedent as 57-year-old Renee Pope of Southwest, D.C. Six other occupants across both vehicles, including two adult women and four juveniles, sustained minor injuries.
The crash remains under active investigation. Anyone with knowledge of the incident is asked to call police at (202) 727-9099 or text tips to the department’s text tip line at 50411.
