Washington, DC, March, 2023 – As the war in Ukraine enters its 55th week, the Russian offensive appears to be weakening across the eastern front, with mercenary forces from Russia’s Wagner Group being the only element making progress in the conflict. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW), a leading Washington, DC-based think tank, reports that the Russian offensive in the Luhansk region is likely nearing its end, and Ukrainian forces have managed to conduct successful counterattacks and regain territory.

Ukrainian Colonel Oleksiy Dmytrashkivskyi has noted a significant decrease in Russian ground attacks, dropping from a high of up to 100 per day to below 30 per day, with only two to nine attacks occurring at night. He attributes this decline to the substantial manpower and equipment losses suffered by the Russian forces.

However, the situation in the Donetsk region remains tense as the Wagner Group, a Russian mercenary organization, has doubled down on their attacks against Ukrainian defenders in Bakhmut city. The United Kingdom’s defense ministry has reported that fighting has slowed around Vuhledar in the Donetsk region, and the only recent success has been witnessed in the battle for Bakhmut.

Despite the challenges posed by the Wagner Group’s advancement, the overall weakening of the Russian offensive across Ukraine’s eastern front signals a promising turn in the conflict. The resilience and determination of Ukrainian forces, coupled with the support of the international community, have played a crucial role in the defense of their country.
